VeggieRx is a free produce prescription program that helps people use food as a tool for better health. Through referrals from healthcare providers, individuals experiencing food insecurity and living with a diet-modifiable health conditions receive weekly "doses" of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with nutrition education to support lasting change. By increasing access to healthy food, VeggieRx works to reduce food insecurity and support improved health outcomes across our community.

How it works:

When a new VeggieRx session opens, HDFFA contacts individuals who have been referred by their healthcare provider to confirm eligibility and complete a short enrollment survey. Once enrolled, participants receive weekly fresh produce and nutrition education for the length of the session, making healthy food a consistent part of everyday life.

VeggieRx is offered in two models, depending on location:

  • Farmers Market Model: Participants shop weekly for fresh fruits and vegetables at eligible farmers market vendors using their VeggieRx benefits.

  • Home Delivery Model: Eligible participants within a set delivery radius receive a weekly box of fresh produce delivered to their home. Pick-up options are available for those outside the delivery area or who prefer not to receive home delivery. (Home delivery is available in select locations.)

  • “I benefitted so much from the veggie rx program… Before [the program started] my A1C (glucose level) was at 8. Just before the program ended, my A1C was a 6.0. I am no longer insulin dependent. Thank you again for the opportunity to participate in your program.”

  • The program greatly reduced my financial stress by giving me a sense of security that I would have healthy, nutrient-dense food each week, an essential part of my recovery from chronic health issues…The nutrition information and recipes provided each week were also helpful and inspiring. I want to say how deeply grateful I am to the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance and the VeggieRx Team for their dedication and efforts in organizing and supporting this program—it has made a lasting difference in my life. This program has truly helped me choose foods that speak health and healing into my body.
